Information from Edward Crudden in Ireland
Hi Susan
Thanks for the Crudden branch of your family tree. It’s almost sure that Charles from the 1st generation was the same who married Jane Dixon in Clones in 1851. The spelling might vary between Dixon , Dickson and Dickenson but that seems to have been fairly common in those times. Also I notice that Jane has become Joanna. From the following links to the Griffiths Valuation surveys circa 1850 for the parish of Clones and the next door parish of Aghalurcher along with Cruddens in each you find the names Dixon and Dickson. The Samuel Crudden in the Clones is my ggrandfather. It might not be easy to identify the father of Charles without further information eg. marriage certificate if it exists. There is a problem with records before the mid 19th century as many records were lost when the Records office was blown up here in the Civil war in the 1920s. Nevertheless it would be worth trying to uncover the marriage certificate. If as I suspect some of the children were born in Ireland then their records might throw up some clues of famliy origin. I came across somewhere a record of an Anne born to Charles and Jane Dixon in Clones in the year 1865. Another clue to family can be found in Christian names as up until that time many were handed down consistently within families. If you can unearth any dates for the first generation it would be very helpful—eventhough at this stage I know it is a long shot at this stage.

From the first generation it is not clear what became of James,John,Margaret and Bernard—-have you any information on them?
The other point I noted was that Anne Agnes St. John and John Joseph O’Sullivan died on the same day —was there an accident?
I must commend you on your considerable efforts. The website is tremendous. Google is a great tool as a few weeks ago I knew little or nothing of my family history and now having made a few contacts I’m getting bits and pieces of useful information which is allowing me to put together bits of the jigsaw.
One interesting find was my namesake ggranduncle Edward who served in the Royal Horse in the British army. When he retired from the army he moved to New York and someone informed me that in the 1890s he ran for Mayor of New York.He was a bit of an eccentric, I think,as he spent $400 on the campaign and got 70 votes He was known as the “Coachman candidate” as after the election he drove a carriage with 4 white horses around the city. You never know what you’ll find.
For your information I write my name in Irish as Eamonn Mac Rodain (pronounced as rowdawn).Mac Rodain translates as “son of the very strong”.
Circa 1850 the great majority of Cruddens came from a small area around Clones and ,looking at it, my view is that they are all quite closely related .When I get enough information to make my family tree I will let you have it . If you have any questions let me know.
Good luck
Edward

Hi
Until very recently I had little or no knowledge of the family history.Using the internet I’ve picked up bits and pieces which has helped to clarify the picture. Here in Ireland the great majority of Cruddens come from a small geographic area centred on South Fermanagh and the town of Clones. There are also so few families at the start of the 19th century that its likely most of the families are related.Records before 1850 in Ireland are poor so it is not easy to tie it up precisely.
My ggrandfather Samuel came from a small farm outside Clones at Arnot’s Grove. He was married to an Anne Lynch and had 5 children that I’ve traced—-Edward,John (my grandfather),Mary Anne,Bridget and Ellinor. There is mention that there might be other brothers–a James and a Frank are mentioned. In the course of getting this information I got details of births deaths and marriages from Clones parish. The marriages I got started at 1865.However the person who sent the list mentioned a marriage in 1851 between Charles Crudden and Joanna Dixon which might very well be your ancestor. If this is your ancestor then it’s a matter of trying to locate which family he belonged to .Can you tell me if any or all his children were born in Ireland?
When I took a quick look at the Griffiths Valuations circa 1850 online I find 43 Crudden.Croddan or Credan listed.There are 9 James,10 Patricks,2 Felix,2 Daniel,2 William,2 Samuel,2 Anne,2 Thomas,3 Margaret,1 Laurence,1 Francis,1 Catherine,1 Owen,1 Lowry,1Mary,1 Edward,1 Richard and 1Rev Peter.
Most of the Jamess would appear to be father and son as generally two are listed together in each parish. The Patricks are more spread out.I found the names in the following areas:
Fermanagh :Aghalurcher,Clones,Aghavea,Galloon.Killesher and Rossorry.
Tyrone :Aghalurcher,Dromore,Errigal Keerogue and Errigal Through.
Cavan :Loughdavan Drumlumman and Scrabby.
Monaghan :Drummully and Magheracloone.
Belfast : Belfast
Armagh :Tartaraghan.Clonmacash.
In the British census of 1881 there are two Cruddens born in Ireland before 1830—-James b1820 and Julia b1821.
In the US census 1880 there are 15 Cruddens born in Ireland on or before 1830
John b1800, Margaret b1815, Mary b1830, Patrick b1833, Rev Peter b1825, James b1828, Elizabeth b1826, Jane b1828, William b1822, Annie b1830, Patrick b1830, James b1822, Charles b 1833, Patrick b1829 and Bernard b1830.
In Freeholders Records I found somewhere online there is the following information:
John Crudden
Crocknagrally,
Aghalurcher,
Fermanagh.
Sept 1796 A house and lands.
Peter Crudden,
Kilturkbeg,
Drummully,
Fermanagh.
1801 A house and lands
Some additional information I picked up about Donagh graveyard indicates that a Patrick Crudden had a headstone erected in 1837 to his wife Mary aged 60– guessing that Patrick is around the same age it would leave him born around 1775.
If we take James of Kilturk as the earliest we know then it is quite conceivable that the generation born between 1770 and 1795 could have produced the later families. That generation could possibly have included John of Crocknagrally, Peter of Kilturkbeg ,James of Lammy and Patrick of Donagh bcirca 1775.Perhaps Bernard b1793 d1864 could be included. We may have missed someone else of course.
Hearsay has it that a brother or uncle of my grandfather was attacked by a gang in Glasgow. In the fracas which followed he struck one of the gang with a weapon in his possession causing a bad or even fatal injury. It’s said he left Glasgow the next day by boat for the USA.It just confirms that there was some connection between my family and Glasgow.
Do I note that Boo O’Sullivan was in Fredrick ?Va because I’m fairly sure Crudden family also settled in Va in the 19th century.
If there are any queries let me know
Good luck
Edward Crudden
